And the award for The Best Fried Shrimp goes to.....
"Soul Food Chess House!!!!" I've said it before and I'll say it again, sometimes the best cooked food is in "The Hood" and that rings oh so true with Soul Food Chess House.

You won't get Maitre D  Service here, but what you will get is the best the darn Fried Fish & Shrimp outside of Chateau A La Cheryl (that's my house, lol).  I've come here so many times and have tried the fried whiting, fried shrimp, chicken wings, collard greens, Mac & cheese, potato salad and cabbage. What I can say about Soul Food Chess house that keeps me coming back is the consistency of the Shrimp. No matter what day of the week or hour of the day, the shrimp is always consistent. Whenever I have a taste for fried shrimp I have my go-to spots that I frequent, but they have all proven to be hit or miss at times; but with Soul Food Chess House they never disappoint.

Now let's talk about the Fried Whiting. They  cooked it with just the right amount of crispness & just the right amount of crunch, I love it, although they were a little heavy handed with the salt, it was honestly the best Fried Fish of any of the Soul Food Spots in NJ that I have tried. Though the potato salad is good, it's not great, but has potential to greatness! The reason it lacks greatness is because they're missing the eggs, potato salad without the eggs is what I call a shortcut; while taking a shortcut is good, it doesn't make for greatness, however, Soul Food Chess House does  make pretty good potato salad overall ,
add those eggs    and greatness will have been achieved.

So until then I'll keep them at 4 stars. But the Shrimp gets 5 Stars hands down!

Well I l only posting this because of the owners attitude.
I had got a FB ad about this place, and the picture of the food looked gross on a paper plate or whatever.  So i asked in a comment why am I getting this ad on my wall... then blocked the ad!

Well I get a "blocked number" call from the owner (i knew it was him because that was the only comment i had written) He starts telling me to not comment on his restaurant on FB!!
That s what facebook is for!! Get oof of it of you dont like it.  Who da f.. look for someones number, block his number and call and harrass me over the phone. (And blocked me but it s ok i had blocked the page first)
That just shows how this business is handled!
Well guess what ? You created this situation by calling me. This is bat shit crazy!  Ppl have to know!
Instead of threatening ppl, take the feedback and improve!
That s a shitty business move you just did.
Next time don t call ppl!

I would say visit if you have a soul food craving. My food was good. I ordered fried chicken, Mac and cheese, cabbage and rice. Only issue I had was my cabbage and rice had no flavor. Also it's good to know this place well not let you use a card unless you're paying a $10 minimum.

Ordered over the phone today at 615.. my drive took approximately 9 minutes when I arrived I was not greeted by anyone.. finally when the young lady came up front I gave her my name and was told my food would ready shortly.. 30 minutes came and went no one said anything.. I asked what was going on with my order and was told the Mac and cheese was not done.. I asked well when was someone going to say something being that I have been sitting here for about 45 minutes the young lady just looked at me as if I had 3 Heads they.. had no potato salad, no yams.. makes no sense that we get treated like this
